SO, I realize I just purchased one of the most hated JD tractors but I'm going to get this damn thing running. I know little about the rig, she does start. When we tried loading up to get it home from the sellers house the hydraulics would not work. You could see the pistons try to act, but not really. She took about 3 gallons of hydro fluid and still nothing. We tried bleeding the lines at the farthest points (got a little bit of nasty fluid then the new started flowing).
So we decided to comealong the bucket and boom up to get her loaded, all the new and old fluid came back out of the fill tank along with evidence of water in the system. Once that was done, we tried to drive out and nothing. Im assuming the transmission is ran off the hydraulic system? ANYWAY, I'd like to know where to start with getting the hydraulics working, how to bleed the system. I DO have a few leaking lines that I know of.
The pump seems to be on the front of the crankshaft. There seems to be power steering but the lines come from a breather of some sort under the dash up to a pump in front of the fuel tank. I have one brake dragging would like to know how the brake system is supposed to work (there are two pedals)
ANY help would be great and YES, I know I have a battle on my hands with this rig, but its mainly to tinker on and use around the small farm we have. I did get a service manual but it hasnt answered all my questions.

Sounds like you have just purchased pandora's box. Bout all I can tell you is the transmission deosn't work off the hydraulics. Add one more problem to your list.

Not only did you get one of the worst tractor JD made you go the worse one of them being it is a diesel. As for the transmission not working that could be a bad clutch or some such problem in the clutch area. As for the hyds does it have it own pump for the loader of does it run off the tractors hyds?

Following the lines it goes from the fill tank, up to a pump in front of the radiator, back to a plunger that lifts to activate the front or rear hydro levers......so to answer your question, it seems it runs off the tractors hydro system

I have a gas 1010 that I completely restored, including a transmission cleanout/rebuild.

Mine does not have a loader so I can't help you there. Transmission wise the transmission housing is separate from the hydraulics in ALL models of 1010. Since you already have hydraulic issues the easiest thing to do to at least see what might be going is to remove the lines running from the pump to the rear quadrant, unbolt it, and then angle it up on a wood block you can access the shifter cover. Take the shifter cover off and look in and see if you see anything broken. If you can provide pictures I can probably provide some insight. However it not moving at all is a bad sign...Check fluid in transmission housing. Filler is on right side (if sitting in seat) halfway back on the foot rest. Little knob. Drain is on the opposite side under the left foot rest. I had a part of my tranny cracked and all the fluid had drained...maybe yours had something similar happen?

Let me know what you find and I'll try and give you advice from there.

(quoted from post at 13:30:38 04/29/18) diesel unit. its a JD 1010.

How deep are your pockets, how skilled are you, how much spare time do you have and how much shop equipment/tools do you have ?

Thank you for the direction and being the first to
actually answer a question vs tell me I wasted my
money. I?ll keep ya posted

Is you 1010 an ag or ind model? The brakes are manually operated that contain 2 disks separated with 3 balls. You will probably have to disassemble to remove rust/dirt to stop brake disk from dragging.

Boyle78,

Well you can add me to the list of fools that have a 1962 1010 W. Mine is pretty far down on my to do list though (may not live that long) LOL. Will be following your progress as I have Mnethercutt, it can be done.

That's an industrial model. I've learned that the Industrials are different from the regular Ag tractors. The hydraulics on the industrials are a bit...different...but i'll still help as much as I can. I've attached 2 images of the transmission inards I took during my rebuild. The first is looking into the shifter section during dissasembly. I had already removed the input shaft at that point. The second is of the rear differential with the right part (not sure what it's called) removed.
