4WD JD 950 help

I have a JD 950 4WD tractor. Currently with the 4WD engaged the front wheels drive but the rear wheels do not. With the 4WD disengaged the rear wheels do not work. Does anyone know what tends to break that would cause this type of malfunction? I want to try and target my disassembly if possible. Thanks.

I will try this again when the rain lets up a little. From what I remember when the issue happened locking/unlocking the diffferential made no difference.

That means your differential is the issue,,center pin or gear failure,,or possibly a broken Axel,,when it don't move with the diff out it means the power is going to the side that has failed, when you lock the diff. the power is shared to both sides. I don't know the weak spots on those little tractors to be sure which part of the diff is failed,,but for sure it is in that area,,

Thank you for all the help. Now I can take the tractor apart smart.

Best regards,

John

Before you start jack up the rear end and with the diff locked and in gear, see if one axle turns free start looking at that axle first.

Thanks for the tip. I jacked it up and the left side turns. I will start on that side. Thanks again.

I noticed as I started taking things apart that the wheel stops turning when I apply the brake on the non-functional side. Does that mean pinion problem? I’m assuming everything between the brake and the wheel is still ok.

Is my logic ok?

Thanks for helping.

John

Finally had enough time and ambition to break this apart. The final drive pinion shaft was broken at the transition from the splines in the deferential and the final drive gear. Found a used one that is in good shape to install. Any tips for installing this part?

Generally it is better to install a used pair of matching gears , but it will probably be ok if the clearances are properly set.
