Just purchased a 1963 1010 with serial number "T15859T" on the motor plate. I haven't been able to find much info so far on this exact unit, any help would be appreciated. Looking for operating and service manuals as well!

. Sorry, wish we had some good news for you. At least you did not purchase a 2010. I wish you had checked here before handing the money over .What will this tractor be used for ? If it is a gas 1010 not a diesel, with time , money, skill and patience . a gas 1010 can be made to function. . If it is a diesel , you just purchased the 3rd most hated John Deere of all time .
1-800-522-7338 for manuals . Parts book is free online at the John Deere site . . Some components will swap with the 420 and 430.

Well that?s a bit of a disappointment lol. I did get the
diesel motor and know she doesn?t like to start in
the cold. Plan on using it to work around the small
farm and clear some land.

Sorry but you now have one of the worst 2 JD tractor ever made. Parts are hard o find for them and if and when you do they will cost you half again as much for them as other tractors.

As for hard starting when cold well that is common for most any diesel engine.

I have a 1010 parts tractor and the reason it is a parts tractor is because of the cost of parts it just was not worth the $$ to fix

It is not a bad engine. Just tough to find parts for. 1010 diesel starts a lot better in the cold when the fuel-primer is intact and working. If missing, it is still available new aftermarket. Of course, the glow plugs have to work too since it is one of the few indirect diesels Deere ever made.

Sounds like your's needs the early style glow-plugs with the 5/8" hex? Available aftermarket. WAP sells them as part # 6A467G011

I have a 1960 1010 and love it, but it is a crawler. My main gripes with a 1010 wheel tractor are lack of aftermarket parts support and a lousy wheel brake system (not a Deere design).

# 15859 is not much newer then my 1960. Ought to be a 1961, not a 1963 according to my charts.

Thanks for the info! I?m not too discouraged about the purchase since it?s a hell of a lot cheaper than anything new and it?ll only be used around the small farm we have (clearing stumps and rocks) I?m pretty mechanicaly inclided, but will probably be reaching out for more information.

I've got a 1010 diesel. Overhauled 2 of them about 5 years ago. Didn't have any trouble finding parts. Running good yet today with no problems.

On the plus side if you ever have to do a rebuild the Diesel sleeve plate is half as expensive as the gas, and you can get one from a 2010 gas or diesel. 1010 gas deck only fits 1010 gas.

RE: " you can get one from a 2010 gas or diesel. 1010 gas deck only fits 1010 gas"

Nope. 1010 diesel and 2010 gas share the same sleeve-deck. NOT a 2010 diesel.

I have a 1010 gas, right around yours in age. Mine is a RS which is the cultivating built tractor. I heard many of the things you are hearing now about it being terrible. My experience owning it in a year in a half is that I kinda like the little thing. I have done a bunch maintenance and smaller fixes on mine and not had any real trouble finding parts. I use the tractor for cultivating primarily but it has found a home on our 5 foot snowblower, plowed a few acres with a JD 415 2 bottom plow, completed some discing and has done a bunch of other general chores. For our smaller size operation it is a good little tractor. We also own a JD 1020 gas which yes is an even better utility tractor than the 1010. The tractor is easy to work on, still fairly simple in design when thinking of the MT I had versus the 1020, 2355, etc. It is also light enough to move with an implement in tow that my Chevy 1500 can pull it on the small equipment trailer where as getting into the 1020 and then the 2355 need to get onto the bigger trailer and the diesel truck.

Overall I do not regret buying the tractor. It has done what I expected of it to this point, not expecting the world of it, and has found a spot in on our operation. I should also say the tractor was in decent working/running shape when I bought it. If it was a basket case I am sure my experience would have been different.
