Fuel leaking from carb

JD1010W

I replaced the sediment bowl fuel filter on my JD 1010W because the old one was leaking around the bowl and the gasket was shot. After letting the tractor sit for a day or two with the petcock totally off I get about a cup of gas pouring out when I remove the air intake tube. I had trouble starting and keeping it running last fall and it seemed to flood easily so I rebuilt the carb over the winter. Is it possible that the gas is draining from the cylinders, or could I have a defective fuel filter? I think I have other issues with the distributor causing it to have a weak spark, but want to get the fuel supply problem figured out first.

1. The shutoff valve in your SWELL new sediment bowl, (likely from The Land of Almost Right) isn't shutting off completely.

2. The inlet valve "needle and seat" in your carburetor isn't functioning properly.

3. The gasoline pooling in the carb's "air horn" and air inlet tube us NOT "draining from the cylinders".

4. - The sintered bronze weep plug in the bottom of your carb is stopped up. Order a new one from roberts (sama as a 420) and replace it when you fix the needle and seat or possibly bad float. Use a pin punch to remove the old plug and a larger pin punch to install the new one. After that if it leaks the gas will drip out the bottom instead of building up in the air horn.

GOOD point, M-MAN... that little strainer is often overlooked, and varnish from the gas and dirt sure do clog 'em up over the years.

Bob and M-Man, thanks for the tips. I think I solved the leaking gas problem by really cranking down on the shut-off valve on the fuel filter. I haven't had time to take the carb. apart again, but I did test the float previously and it seemed fine. I suspect the needle and seat. I found the Robert's site, but did not find the weep plug, only the rebuild kit.

In the meantime I took a closer look at the distributor and it definitely needed interior cleaning. A few questions about that...How do you determine the make and model of the distributor (no markings anywhere)? How does the shaft come off? It looks like it may be a very small allen screw, but maybe a press-fit pin. I would like to re-lubricate it as the access hole was very dirty with caked on grease or oil. What lubricant should I use on the shaft? Also cleaned up everything in inside the cup. What lubricant (if any) should I use on the springs, weights and other interior parts? Finally, if I can figure out the make and model of the distributor, is it possible to find parts like the weight springs or cap hold-down clips, or would I need to send for a total rebuild? Hopefully it doesn't come to that!
