JD 60 first reduction gear shaft

I finally got my first reduction gear cover off and when I took the gears off the drive shaft, I noticed that the drive shaft had a lot of free play inside the transmission case, and I mean a lot. Is this normal for this part, or is it suppose to be held rigid ?

Also since I drained about a gallon of oil from my first reduction cover, I assume gear oil is getting in from the transmission. The only place that looks like it can be coming in is from the countershaft bearing housing or the gear right below it. I can find the gasket/shim for that lower gear in the parts book, but for the countershaft, I can't find that gasket. Does anyone know what page that is on?

The trans. oil can and will flow into the reduction gear cover area. The input shaft is really wobbly when the cover is off as it relies on the bearing in the cover to support it and hold it into proper position in and out. So far it all sounds normal to me.

If the tractor had a lot of oil in the reduction case it could be the crank seal is leaking engine oil into the transmission case. Now is a good time to replace the seals. My 2 cents.

You can replace the right side seal without touching the flywheel. You have to remove the PTO drive gear in the right side of your picture. You may need some heat and an adequate puller. The seal is in the main bearing housing behind the gear. Before you try to remove the main bearing housing, you have to disconnect the oil supply line inside the crankcase. You must remove the crankcase cover on the top of the block to access the oil line. I consider the oil line to be the hardest part of the job. You might have to mutilate (shorten) a wrench to get the oil line loose. I agree with the others - you're too close to NOT replace the crankshaft seal. You can use a fish fry kettle and some used fish fry oil to heat the PTO drive gear when you put it back on.

By the way - I don't think you should pull outward on that transmission input shaft. . .

you do not need to take the crank case cover off the oil line hooks to a fitting in the case and feeds thru the case. there is a packing in the main brg housing that keeps oil in the housing Look it up in the JD parts brake down and you will see what i am trying to tell you. dont listen to people that don,t know what they are talking about

Help me out here Kent - I respect your advice. I had to remove the oil lines on my JD 50 before the main bearing housings could be removed. I "think" the 60 is the same design. On my JD 630, I did not have to remove the oil lines because it is a different design. On both tractors, I needed to replace the main bearing, so the housing had to come off. I think you are saying that you can replace the seal without removing the main bearing housing. I've never tried that. Thank you for your comments. I've learned a lot from you and others on this site.

If it is an early 60, then PJH is correct in that you have to unhook the oil line to the main housing. If it is a late 60, then you are correct that it feeds thru the case and the line is not hooked to the main housing.

Thanks Drew - I didn't know that they made that change at serial number 602500.

For the original poster - if your serial number is 602500 or later, do as Kent Petersen said. If it is 602499 or older, do as I said. I'm sorry for the confusion. Kent was right - I didn't know what I was talking about.
