1946 John Deere A

when I changed the engine oil in my A, I had a lot of water (clear) don't know from where it came, but I always turn it over a few times a month, to keep it from getting stuck, well all I can think is last winter with the water in the crankcase, it froze up and busted the oil pump coupling, now when I started it this spring no oil pressure, I blew out the lines to the gauge, how hard is it to get the oil pump out? and can I do it without having to tear the crankcase apart? thanks Ron Cutler
 
the square couple is at the top of the oil pump shaft, just under the governor box.. 4 bolts under the tractor @ oil pump
cover both gear & shaft will fall out. Remove the crank case cover 1st. Clean off the oil pump shaft with gas or solvent.
Apply some good duct tape to shaft at the lowest point you can apply it. The tape prevents the shaft from falling all the
out, Your arms are not long to hold the shaft & R & R the couple at the same time. Push shaft back into place & rebolt the bottom
remove the tape & refill with oil.. You can buy a new couple too from Deere. Or I've seen some brazed back together..
 
Replaced the coupler on a 50 B recently. Helps to have a wife with slender arms!
I lowered the oil pump cover and gears from below, while my wife was able to reach into the crankcase and place the coupler on the pump shaft. It was a snap with 2 people.
The pump sump is the lowest point. Moisture/condesation is a problem and freezes in cold weather.
Wondering if the pump cap could be drilled and tapped and drain plug added??
I run gun shy now in below freezing weather and turn the engine over by hand to check for resistance.
 
When you pull the 4 bolts off that cover. Temporarily replace 2 bolts with longer ones to keep the plate in place. You then can reach in and replace the coupler by yourself.
