JD60 belt pully and

I've got a John Deere 60 I'm going thru the clutch right now. I have an issue with the inside of the belt pulley (where the clutch discs
ride against) and the new clutch slider disc surface rusting up. It's due to moisture and taking me longer to put together than I want.
Anyway, will this hurt anything? Should I buff all surfaces to clean metal or will the clutch discs just rub thru it with no problem? Also
I was told by Steiner not to paint or put anything on the new clutch slider disc. So should I or even paint the inside of the pulley? Or
just buff rust off and put it all together? Thanks. Just dont' wanna have to tear into it again.

IMHO just buff it and go. Once its in operation it will be pretty much self cleaning. 60's a nice tractor, have fun with it!

Sand it or scotch brite it best you can. I like to take all the metal plates that are removable and sand blast the surfaces on them to deglaze them. Really helps get rid of grabby clutch syndrome.
