John Deere GP

I picked up a GP last year. It needs a crank seal on the pulley side. What is the best seal and where can I get one. I have a little trouble with the Ensign carb cork gaskets shrinking inside the bowl and then the gas just runs thru like it has no float. :( I have some new gasket material to try and seal the carb up then it will run good again.

The only seal on the pulley side of the crankshaft is a thick piece of felt that stuffs into the main bearing on top of the bearing cap. If you are trying to salvage the cork floats in the carburetor get them dried out good and put a coat of shellac on them to seal them. I made new floats for my carburetor out of large corks.

I have a new brass float. The gasket on the bottom of the "jet" tube "where the main load jet screws into the top" about 7/8" in diameter, and 2" long, it shrunk up and was allowing the gas to run right through.
Who makes the Felt for the crankshaft? Or is there a CR lip seal that will fit?

I cleaned up my old felt and reused it. It's been a while but I think the felt was a 1"x1" strip 4"-5" long, it might need to be fatter. It is just packed in the main bearing housing between the cap and housing. Are you working on an ensign bj or k carburetor?

When it comes time to "Blow the Carbon" out of it, put a 2x14" plow behind it..!

I blew the carbon out of a small bore GP that is used mostly in parades...

It wheezed, missed, coughed and carried on for the better part of an acre, before it settled down and worked smooth..!

For a new float, go to Ebay and buy a float for a Linkert Carburetor Nitrophyl Float Fit Harley & Indian. For a crankshaft seal on the flywheel side, Cork Groth at Tractor trauma Center will machine your slinger with a o-ring for a seal.

I did work it last year. Over the winter the cork gasket inside the ensign shriveled up. Then I started to get oil out into the new clutch rings.

Try the video of me pulling a 2-14 plow. I had a little trouble with the throttle not wanting to stay up and creeping down a bit. It pulled a 2-14 fairly well. I bored and re-sleeved this GP, it has new rings, new valves, and exhaust seats. Runs well till the cork gaskets inside failed after sitting this winter. I don't like the clutch getting oily, so it will be fixed.

Is your tractor a big bore or small bore? They used different ensign carburetors.

It almost ended it's life like this.
