Hello All,
I'm new to the forum and would greatly appreciate some advice.
Currently I am looking at the 2002 John Deere 5420 4x4 w/open station. Seems like a good tractor with minor fuel flaws from what I have read. I need a tractor 80hp and up preferably that can be used for most all farm/ranch jobs. Cutting/baling hay, batwing mowers, etc. If there are more suited tractors please let me know this will be my first John Deere purchase and I want it to last for years to come. Thanks for your help in advance

I own a 6320 a heavier and a step up from the 5 series tractors. I use mine for all of what you intend. Can't say anything about the 5420 but the
6320 has been a good tractor for what I use it for. No complaints.

Hi, I don't have any direct experience with this tractor. What are the fuel flaws?

I did look it up on TractorData. I see it has three transmission options, collar shift, syncShuttle, and powerReverser. What transmission does it have? I personally think the transmission type gets to be really important depending on what kind of work you will be doing, especially if you will have a loader on it. It sounds like you will be doing a lot of PTO work. I know I would not be satisfied with a collar shift.

I am a JD fan so my bias is in that direction. And it is made in the U.S. :)

Since it is a 2002 an important question would be what kind of care/maintenance has it had?

Good Luck.

Paul

If you don't mind me asking, what year is your tractor and does it have a wet or dry clutch? Thanks

I see Bernie and I posted about the same time.

I did not want to jack you up the cost scale but I really agree with Bernie's 6320 choice for the reasons given. It also has better transmission choices for what you are doing.

I appreciate everyone's advice on the 6320. I will definitely start searching the web for one and hope for the best. Thanks again and if anyone has an opinion of another John Deere that may suite my needs please let me know.
