So I'm replacing the bearings in such. Is there a replacement felt seal available for this, (H1033R)? I think I can use the old one but it seems kinda loose. My main question though, is; how do I determine how many shims to use on the housing to cover? Thanks!

If Deere doesn't have the felt seal, other aftermarket suppliers such as John Reed Tractor Parts, or Sharp's Antique Tractor Works, can probably help you.

Regarding the shims, the instructions in Field Service Bulletin 96-S basically state that there should be a "slight" amount of backlash in the bevel gears and they should turn freely when the Power Shaft is turned by hand. The instructions say you should start with a full set of shims, snug the bearing housing down, and then loosen the housing and remove one shim at a time, starting with the thick shims. After each shim is removed, tighten cap screws to check adjustment. Repeat until the correct mesh of the power shaft gears is achieved.

So basically, make sure there is no binding of gears, and if you can detect just a little rattle (backlash) between gears, things are good.
