We have a 720 diesel my father and brother tried to pull start it. When dad left the clutch out he heard a bang and then the tractor free wheels. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Have you operated the gearshift from the "lo station" to the "hi station" and back?

If you are lucky, the "hi lo" shift collar popped into neutral.

I haven't did anything yet. I'm still trying to chicer out why he thought this was a good idea. First he tried jumping it with 12v cooked the coils on the pony. And the only reason he wanted to start it was to hear it run. I won't be able to look at it this weekend. I'm fishing for ideas that hopefully don't include a broken crank.

There should be noting wrong with pull-starting a 720.

Years ago, I knew an old farmer on a pretty good-sized hill, and he started his 730 for half a lifetime by parking it on the hill and when he needed it, he'd let is coast for a bit and pick up speed, then engage the clutch to start it.

That would be what my dad would do. Growing up we never had good batteries in any tractor. When I was 6 we had a barn fire everyone was at work some kids lit a hay wagon on fire. Our neighbor if he could have started the tractor Hooked to the hay wagon he could have pulled the wagon out before the barn cought. Now that I bought my own farm I am not perfect but all my tractors have good batteries. My farm is 3hrs from dads so becomes a chore to run down and fix his stuff. He told me that this tractor is becoming to hard for him and he wants me to take it up to my place. May be the best thing.

What Bob said is probably the problem. Hope the shift fork didn't break in the process.

Did the engine turnover freely before they tried to pull start it or was the engine stuck or maybe hydro-locked?

Does a 720 diesel have a decompression lever?

Yes it was free it does have a decompression switch for when you start the diesel engine.

Thank you to everyone that responded to me. I was able to get down and look at the old boy. The freewheel is prob. The least of my worries. It needs a lot more work than what I remember. He left it sit out for a long time. It's on it's way to my farm so I can take it apart and give it the love it deserves. I never worked on a 2 lung diesel but have done a lot on my 60 and B. I need to get a shop manual for the 720 and a lot of clean up.i have a real love for old iron and especially 2 cylinders. Any luck and a lot of time I may do my spring plowing in 2019 with it.
