I have a 1981 John Deere 2940 that has 2 SCV that both allow fluid to bypass so when I hook up to an implement the cylinder either lowers or on my round baler lifts the latch cylinders. I would like to rebuild them or have them rebuilt. I bought the rebuild kits from JD but looking at the manual, I think I should probably send them somewhere to be rebuilt and tested. Any suggestions?

Tim is the person I'd send my JD closed center hyd components to for repair. I wish I had access to a hyd test bench such as he has built way back when I was a JD dealer service manager. I might not be a grey haired. :lol:
The SCV's can be repaired. Rebuilding them is not difficult for a JD tech that has been around them. Adjusting them takes a dial indicator, a service tool to hold valves shut and a little know how but, not hard if you understand what you are doing and can follow a tech manual. I rebuilt many of these in the last 40 years. Old and later versions. The later style box used on the 2840 are the easiest ones to do and takes a few hours. As others have said here it's not difficult to repair them if you know what your doing and have the adjusting plate and a dial indicator. When I worked for a John Deere we did them all the time. We didn't have a bench tester but always had a tractor around we could stick it on and check it with two pressure gauges. If you don't have the right equipment, sending it out is the thing to do.
