2940 converted to electric intake header...Thanks to all!

I had looked through several old forum posts here about converting from ether to an electric intake heater...got enough good information that I decided to take the plunge!

Turns out that a Bosch RE5 glow plug (very common JD part #RE502079) has the same threads as the ether nozzle did on this tractor, so it threads right into the manifold. The glow plug either touches, or almost touches, the other side of the manifold (redesigned wider on later models which came from the factory with a glow plug intake heater?). So I put a couple shims under the glow plug just for safety's sake.

For the other parts I also used standard JD parts just to make it easy to replace them if needed in the future. The momentary switch is AL17684 (had to drill a bigger hole, but installed it where the old ether injector was on the dash) and the 70-amp relay is AL81719.

On this tractor, there was a spare black w/ yellow striped wire in the wiring harness (it's labeled as spare in the tractor's wiring diagram), so I used it to get power from the momentary switch to the relay.

Works like a charm...and I hope this information helps somebody else who wants to do that conversion.

I have a 2940 as well. What are the benefits of doing this? Better cold weather starting? I would like to learn.

I never did like the potential effects of ether in an engine. Also, if your cranking speed is slow (low battery) you can essentially get backfires with ether. And I never seem to have a can of ether handy when I need one.

Often in the winter I have tractors on a battery maintainer, so I have a good charge in the batteries--it takes a bit to run the intake heater, but not a lot.

If the engine doesn't start on your first try, you can just heat some more with an intake heater. My personal opinion is that it just works better--or maybe it's just that I like it better?

Well, I don't mean backfires actually. But if the starter isn't cranking the motor fast enough as the ether is injected, and you stop cranking, the left over vaporized ether can make the motor harder to crank for a bit.
