JD 60 First Reduction Gear Oil

I went to inspect my 60 today to get it ready for spring field work and I saw that it was leaking gear oil at the bottom where the first reduction gear cover attaches to the tractor.

I decided that might be a good time to replace that gasket, so I removed the plug at the bottom of the reduction gear cover to drain the oil from the first reduction gear. Well, to my surprise, it just keeps draining and draining like I am draining all the gear oil from the transmission. All ready I have taken out a gallon and it is still coming out .

Is this normal, or is there some seal inside that is bad that is allowing the gear oil in the transmission to seep into the first reduction gear section?

Chas you are in fact at least partially draining the transmission and final drive. Slowly. It will leak through around the PTO drive. There is no seal between the two cavities.

LOL, I had the very same thing happen to me. The Operator's Manual said 1 1/2 qts in the reduction gear cover, so I thought I'd change it. Came back later and had about 1 1/2 gal drained out, and it was still draining. I replaced the drain plug, and put a like amount of new oil in it.
