1935 A - Fan Removal From Shaft

I recently purchased a 35 model John Deere A. The fan bearings on the fan end of the shaft need replacing. I have removed the entire fan / shaft / housing from the tractor. It's my understanding one should be able to push "in" on the fan to release two "C" shaped keys that fit into a grove in the end of the shaft in order to remove the fan from the shaft. However, it only moves about 1/2 the distance necessary to remove the keys from the grove and sounds as though it bottoms out within the housing, not wanting to be depressed any further. Looking for suggestions to get this apart without tearing it up.

Helps sometimes to have an extra set of hands. Take the front support bracket off, stand the fan shaft assembly on the floor with the fan facing up. Have your helper grasp the fan as near the center as possible and pull down. Use a deep well impact socket that will fit over the shaft and will rest on the metal hub in the fan. Rap on it a few times while your helper pulls down. It'll go. Have some needle nose pliers ready to grab the retainers.

I accidentally discovered that my drill press was exactly the right height to use as a press to depress the collar for the lock clips on the fan. It turned it into a one-man job. You might want to tap it with a hammer/socket to loosen things up first.

I would recommend you replace that fan with the rubber hub with a newer style assembly. It's going to go through your radiator, and you won't be happy.Looks like someone has added something to keep the seal in place also. It shouldn't be there.
