Where did that come from

I am changing the transmission fluid in my 401B Industrial tractor. When I removed the rear drain, on the right side, I found a 1/4 inch ball. It was not all beat up like it came from a ball bearing that came apart. It was like new. I realize this is not something that anyone can answer without taking the thing apart. I just thought someone may have experienced the same thing. Even though this is called an Industrial tractor it is similar to the ag tractor. Stan

Most likely a ball for shift rod positioning. If I remember correctly that has a two stick transmission. Where the shift rods go thru the transmission case springs and steel balls are used for position control and interlock. Do the shifters click into position when put in gear.

Not a Deere but back in 76 was mowing hay with My 75 Ford 4000. All of a sudden "BOOM", transmission going tick, tick. Removed the shift cover and laying there near the top of the case was what appeared to be a detent ball. Tractor maybe a month or two out of warranty. Had dealer come to pick it up, driver took a look under shift cover and just threw ball down into case. Since I had them to service tractor at 50 hours they repaired it, only had to pay for fluid. Sometimes one never knows what is laying around just waiting to rear its ugly head.
