Has anyone ever had a 730 that jumps out of 2nd gear under a load? 2 and 5 gears have been replaced along with all bearings in transmission. Detent, shifting rails, shifting forks also have been replaced. Running out of ideas and patience, and time before planting season. Looking for advice

Thanks,
Kyle

Its usually the sliders between gears that couple and uncouple the gears. I have found that they wont jump out depending on whether you are going up hill or down hill. Its the pressure against the gear that kicks them out

Did you replace both gears, Keys 31 and 39?

Is "pilot bearing" Key # 23 in good shape, as well as the end of shaft # 21 that runs inside it?

Also, lots of parts in the shift yokes and rails area were changed after Serial # 7920 to better lock the transmission in a selected gear until actually pulled out of gear with the shift lever

What's your serial #, even if older could have been retrofitted with the newer shifting parts, IIRC.

"riveroadrat", commenting on your reply to this thread, the only "collar shift" in this transmission is "high and low", the other "gears" are "sliding gear" shifts.

On my 730, bearing 26 was shot, which wore a groove in shaft 24. This caused mis alignment at bearing 23 which caused the hi lo to skip.

Gear shift stick slides over until in neutral, I can't keep it in gear
Using both hands to try to force it to stay in gear.

How does the spline on the sliding gear shaft look in the area where 2nd and 5th are under load? A almost unnoticeable taper could be worn into the shaft from long hard hours of use.

the upper shaft probably had a lot of wear but I can't understand why the locking shifter isn't holding the gear...your locker must be damaged or bad....

rebuilt a few of these....on one model the owner had pulled the tractor so hard that the upper shaft was twisted. We had to torch it out....your locker is probably broken as it is locked there is no way short of something breaking for that gear to move. They had a real problem with the straight gears and wear on the upper shaft. These transmissions are hard and expensive to rebuilt. Alignment is most important in dealing with the rails.
