You could use dielectric grease as a lubricant that will not effect rubber. It's sold in single use packs at the parts store for spark plug boots doing basically the same thing but for easier and hopefully damage free removal too. Also known as silicone grease, it's a translucent gel that won't creep across iron as regular grease would. Also comes in 6 oz tube at a cheaper rate.
