John Deere A Starter

Just wanted to post a message about something I found out here recently! I am working on an early styled (Unstyled in my case) John Deere A with the top starter! I am found that starter number 6578 will line up and work great with a 12v battery! It is a gear reduction starter that can be purchased new for around $100! You will also need a starter button or key switch to complete the install! As to why I am putting this on my Unstyled tractor? I built it for pulling and has too much compression to hand start now! The flywheel and top engine cover from the long hood early styled A?s fit fine on it! Hope this can help someone else!

This is not a finished product! I am going to relocate the battery inside the front weight bracket and probably mount the starter button on the steering post!

Yes I believe it is used on some Bobcats! It might also be a replacement for a John Deere 4020 Diesel! I did much research and found it has the same size gear and number of teeth as the original A starter! It engages and turns the tractor well even with higher compression!
