JD 820 Thermostat Issue

On my 820 2-cylinder, I’ve been trying to warm up the engine but the temp gage needle doesn’t move. The upper water pipes get warm but the bottom ones stay cold - does this sound like one or both of the thermostats aren’t opening? The block is getting pretty warm where the temp gage probe screws in so you would think the temp gage needle would move a little. Let me know your thoughts.

. Have you tested the temperature gauge probe in a pot of boiling water ? Unless the engine is working. It won’t t Make enough heat to open the stats and warm the upper coolant pipes .

The bottom hose will be much colder if the radiator is working correctly.

Put a thermometer in the radiator filler hole and measure there.

Different model so not sure if relevant but on our 430 two cylinder the temp gauge (which is new) will only come off the stop if you are working it. Idling or even just driving around it wont come off the stop.

You can visibly see if the thermostats are closed at room temperature but you'll have to get to them first. Test them in a warming pot of water to see if they fail to open or close properly upon cooling as well. Might need to defeat bypass built into the thermostat housing as without a load, the bypass, if it's there, may be enough keep the temperature down all by itself. IR temp reading guns are relatively cheap, they do make them key fob size and without aiming laser dot too. Top of radiator tank would be the target here, if it's unduely hot then thermostats are letting too much water by them when they are supposed to be closed entirely. It's also another input to the validity of your temperature gauge readings.

Don't know if it would be air locked around thermostat from filling? On my 830 we drilled small hole in thermostat so it wouldn't have that issue.
