Recently bought a nice 820 and got an operators manual for it.
The shifting levers have a connecting device over them and I am not sure why. It seems to be just in the way and the operators manual does not show this device.

The clutch throw out bearing seems noisy. Is there a grease fitting?
 
Not sure if that has a throw out brg. fitting or not ? Does that even have a small inspection cover on the left side like a 1020 ? would. Maybe a large round pop out cover ?

I do not like that safety interlock that they had a recall or something out to add them to that type of tractor. Not sure but I think it added the spring loaded lever so if it wasn't in park and it coasted a bit it would pop on into park.
 

JD 3 cyl 820 has a round inspection cover on clutch housing to inspect clutch fingers & grease throwout brg if tractor still has OEM TO brg with grease fitting.
 
OF, think I may have the service manual for that tractor. May have kept it when I sold mine. E-mail is open.

The devise your talking about on the shifters is an update kit. It is called "Park Lock assurance kit". You have to have the right shifter in low/1st gear then the left will lock into park. Leave it on there. The original shifter could jump/be knocked, out of park and your tractor was rolling. Maybe with you under it.

I do not think the JD 820 has a grease fitting on the throw out bearing.
 
Yeah just take that thing off and throw it away.
That will leave you with that big spring loaded
shifter stick but that's easier to live with than
bumping that other stuff. Plus your shifter rail
should last longer too.
I used to get the replaced sticks from a dealer to
put the tractors back to original.
