JD 4010 Value

I'm looking for opinions on what people think a 4010 Diesel with a bad PTO is worth. Tractor runs and drives great, sheet metal is all there and correct, good paint job, tires 50%. It's a nice looking tractor but makes horrible noise when you turn PTO on, inevitably it's going to need to be split. So what's it worth as is???

There are more expensive repair jobs to do on a 4010 than the PTO but it might need more than the pin changed. W/O a picture and knowing if it is WFE or NFE, 15.5 X 38 tires or 18.4 X 34 tires 1 remote or 2 remotes I would say it would bring at a minimum of 4,000-4,500 dollars from your description. I saw a very late 4010 Diesel WFE, 18.4 X 34 tires, two remotes, pretty straight and good sheet metal sell at auction almost two years ago for 7,000 dollars. If the buyer wanted to make it into an expo tractor then yes he would have to spend a little to make the paint showroom, replace the so-so battery boxes, and to put crisp new tires on. That tractor was plenty fine to take to the field but the standards rise considerably for show.

You could search the archives for what the repair would cost or ask a dealer for a ballpark estimate, then deduct that from what the tractor is worth now ( $3,000 less? ). The clutch linkage could be disconnected or blocked out to prevent anyone from engaging the PTO and causing more damage until it is repaired, but the damage has probably already been done. The tractor could still be used for tillage, hauling, loader work or parked in a collection, but a tractor without a PTO is not very useful to a livestock/hay operation.

IMHO, I would price it as a running parts tractor $2,000 to $3,000. If you have a lot of extra time to kill, maybe find a 4010 or 4020 with a bad engine and bolt the front half of this one to the other ones good back half and sell the remainder for salvage?

The PTO thrust bearing out would be cheap and make an horrible noise.
