Early Styled B Oil Change

Hey guys, I have kind of a stupid question.... You see my cousin just bought an early styled B and the previous owner just changed the oil but said the filter was not available when he did, so her put oil in it with no filter. So that leads to the question. We obviously want to put the filter in right away, but what will happen if I take the filter cover off without first draining the oil out? Do I need to drain all the oil out first or will most of it stay in there if I just remove the filter cover? I have never had to do it this way so I just do not know?

Thanks for the reply's!

Yup, he gave me the correct filter, he just could not find it at the time he changed the oil. Thank you for the info!

Be sure to change the rubber seal that the cap tightens against in the groove. They get hard and brittle and don't always seal.
