Working on the rear rims from my JD60. The valve stem area is eaten out from the fluid that they had in them. Got the fluid out and now need to repair that area. Does anyone make a patch to weld in or does someone have a junk rim they would sell me a chunk of rim, enough for both rims, that I can weld in and then re-drill for the valve stem.
Thanks

Some years ago, we had this problem on a Farmall H. We took the rim to a friend who was rather handy with metal work. He cut out a square spot in the rim around the valve stem and made a patch he was able to weld back into that spot. He did a very nice job! The inside of the rim was ground smooth and on the outside, he left the welded bead intact to ensure there was adequate metal and integrity in the welded area. I don't have my own JD 60 sitting in front of me, as it is 12 miles away, so I cannot picture the hole in the rim for the valve stem and any special shapes/contours of the rim itself, making this possibly more difficult.

I thought about welding a washer in place but it won't cover all the area that is weak and my local scrap yard closed several years ago or I know they would be able to help.

Depending on how big the hole is I have had good luck with welding a washer in so as to make a new hole for the stem. I have done it with more then one if the hold is very big. I also took flat steel that is an inch or 2 wide and bent and welded it in to patch a rim. I also keep old rims so if I need part of one I have it and probably have 10 laying around if your close enough yo could get some from me

The valve stem hole is punched on a flattened area of the rim. Your rims have radiused bends where you will have to cut the rusty metal out and weld in the new piece. Cutting a patch out of a rim with good metal around the valve stem hole saves lots of time and work.

I make a repair by cutting out the bad area and use a good piece from another rim to fill in the hole. Use a hammer to flatten out the place for a new valve stem hole. Around here, donor rims are hard to find as they are selling them for fire pits.
