620 power steering fluid

Does anyone know of a power steering fluid that is comparable to the john deere fluid. There is no dealer close to me so was wondering if there was a fluid that I could get at NAPA or other auto parts store that would work. Otherwise I have to order and shipping is as much as the fluid. Thanks

I always use JD fluid, but I wonder how compatable some of the modern automotive power steering would be.

I am not 100% sure, but I think my brother has ATF in the power steering of his 520. He was too stubborn to use John Deere power steering fluid. Been in there a couple of years with no problems.

Interesting question:

I only use JD speced oil so I'm watching for an answer to your question.

There's nothing unique or magical about your tractor's PS system vs. many other PS or hydraulic systems.

If it's in good condition, it will work just fine with UTF, ATF, motor oil, etc., etc..

On the other hand the official stuff MAY be a bit better. I've used it in the classic tractors I've owned.

You have a classic tractor, worth some $$$, why not use what the OEM recommends?

If you are changing the PS oil, a few quarts ain't gonna "break the bank" vs. what the tractor's worth, or if it's leaking a bit and takes a pint or two a year, no issue ether.

If it's leaking big time, it needs to be resealed.

Before repairing the power steering on "Big John" our Model 70 diesel, we used 10W non-detergent oil.

These systems will obviously work with any fluid of similar viscosity to the oem fluid. The problem will be how the fluid reacts with the rubber parts in the long run. Rubber seals will soften, swell, and crack if they aren't compatible with the fluid.

Went ahead and ordered the John Deere fluid. Thanks for all the input. Decided to spend a little extra for shipping and not take any chances. Bob

Kent,

Tell us what that is exactly as it seems they have many different varieties, was told once to use the 10W oil they have. Ended up using that in a cranking engine as 10W was what I was looking for then. Have always used the Two cylinder PS oil in all of my (7) tractors with PS. Thanks

Looks to me like it is the Low viscosity Hy Gard that I have been using in my 2520 compact tractor since 2006, fits Kents description. Part Number: TY22000. Seems like I tried that when working on a PS leak on one of my 70's. Ended up tracking the foaming problem down to a leak at the top of the pumps suction fitting. Ended up draining the low v hy-gard and refilling with the old school PS fluid during this process so do not know, it may have worked. Just know the foaming did not stop until that fitting was sealed.

I used Hy Tran in the power steering in my 630 loader tractor for years without problems and the power steering was used heavy.
