730 water pump

I have my 59 JD 730 LP torn down to replace head gasket and radiator. My water pump turns freely and doesn?t wobble. I can hear the bearing turn as if it were a bit dry, but no other indicators that it is bad. I have had the tractor for over 10 years with the same water pump. I don?t know if it is the original or not but probably is. Do I replace it with an aftermarket, or not? Is there someplace I can have it rebuilt?

I vote with Rick. They are lubricated by the water they pump, so it feeling dry would be sort of normal. I had one rebuilt by JD about 20 years ago for the price of a fair cutting horse. On a 70 they are not that hard to get at. Unless it's showing some sign of dripping I'd leave it alone. " Sufficient unto each day is the evil thereof." May your life be dripless for many years!

They have a sealed bearing if it sounds rough and dry it's on the way out and will leak get it rebuilt or replace while it's off

I think those have a sealed bearing,I don't think a water pump would last long running in water as a lubricant.I would replace it now since you will have the radiator off anyway.I replaced the one on my 720 which probably takes the same pump with a new one for under 200.00.I think YT here probably has them, save a headache down the road.Just my 2 cents worth,Ron
