The original subject was "50 Backfires instead of starting".

Finally figured it out! After checking everything from compression to spark timing to carburetor and finding all seemed to be in working
order. Turning the crank by a socket wrench the magneto had a perfect spark at 5degrees after TDC every time and had a nice wico click.
Turning with the starter showed a spark most of the time and a nice wico click. However, tractor would usually not hit at all or just
backfire which blew up the muffler. New points, condenser, coil, switched to another good known carburetor. Gave up on it a few months and
let it sit!! Finally gave it another go and took off the magneto, AND THERE IT WAS!! The nut that holds the magneto together had backed off
and was laying in the bottom of the tractor's magneto housing. Even without the nut, with the mag bolted up to the tractor it didn't fall
apart and kept working but when the magneto turned very fast the looseness was causing the timing to be off. I went through the magneto and
put her back together and SHE IS RUNNING.

Had a friend call me up and need me to look at his d right away because he was late for a tractor show and had to go right now. I asked him what was it doing and he said that he was trying to start it and all it would do is back fire. I asked what he did and he said that he just put in new spark plugs in and it started to do this and needs me in now. So I garb my mag tool bag and in to town I go to his house. Started to turn the old d over and it would spark on every turn on the flywheel side. Went over to the mag and asked if he worked on it and he told me that he just look in under the cap some and clean it up some and when I was going to remove the rotor it would spin around on the shaft so I ask him if he had it off and I got I maybe had it off. seen the little drive pin was gone and found it under the clutch rod. Put the mag with the flywheel so the hole in the mag shaft was across put the pin in rotor on cap on plugs in two turns it was running and he was on and off to the trailer. Help he chain it down and off he was lol.
