JD 820 Hydraulic Pump Issues

The powertrol pump on my 820 (2 cylinder) makes a loud grinding noise when switched to on and the hydraulics don’t work. If I turn the lever a little one way or the other, the grinding goes away. Perhaps it’s not kicking in and for some reason, the lever can be turned all the way around in either direction but shouldn’t it only have 180 deg of rotation? In other words, shouldn’t you only have to turn it clockwise to on and then counter clockwise back to off?

I did take the pump off the tractor and took it apart but didn’t see anything obvious that was wrong. I have the parts manual and there doesn’t appear to be any parts missing. The bushings seem a little worn causing the drive gear to be a little loose. Also, the shifter collar has grooves ate in it from contacting the drive gear pins so could that be why it’s making a grinding noise? Most of these parts are not available anymore from JD so should I be looking for a used pump? Anybody have one for sale?

The gear should only be shifted "on" with the engine off, it won't engage while running, and would likely grind exactly as you describe.

Does anyone know the part number for the hydraulic pump mounting gasket (4 hole) for the 820? I can’t seem to find it in the parts book.

I believe it's R1657R, it's on page 15-8 and 15-9, and on 75-2 and 75-3 for the pump itself. The pump uses four bolts to connect but the gasket only has two holes. If I remember right two of the bolts go inside an area but not through the gasket.

I made my own, though it was a bit tricky. Have to have the thickness right too, as it is a shim for gear backlash
