my 4450 is using antifreeze it doesnt appear to be in the oil pan nor do i notice it in the exhaust pipe,so my queston is where to start looking from someone elses point of view thanks for reading post any suggestions are greatly appreciated

I had an engine in a pickup once that was using antifreeze never could see it in the oil but couldn?t find any other leak so I sent off an oil analysis to cat and sure enough there was antifreeze in the oil . Pulled the head and there a small knick in the head surface right near a water passage had the head resurfaced and a new gasket and that solved the problem

Those water pumps are famous for leaking coolant into the oil pan if the drain hole is plugged up.That problem provides plenty of overhauls.

It still amazes me why JD engineers decided to drive water pump from engine timing gears instead of belts similar to earlier models. I've had to change my 4255 water pump twice for leaking coolant in the crankcase. I'm aware of the drain hole but IMHO the hole is a bugger to locate/clean. I don't remember 4240/4440 with belt driven WP's have heating problems.

If there are many hours on the water-pump...or you have no isea if the pump has been changed or rebuilt...best bet is to replace it before it fails.

I would pull the oil plug and just see if coolant runs out...or check for milky oil. The pumps on these are notorious for leaking into the engine...usually in a big way! Fine one day then the crankcase is full of anti-freeze! Sometimes they will just leak a bit of coolant into the engine and it may not be immediately noticeable.

I agree that this is most likely a water pump issue,, and I want to remind all to be sure to actually turn the re-placement water pump gear by hand before you install it,, I had a customer last year replace his 4960 pump with a Deere re-man pump,,it must have been pressed too tight during assembly,,he bolted it on and had over heating issue ,,the impeller spun on the shaft and was not pumping water,,a belt driven pump would have slipped the belt..
