anyone know of a repair shop central indiana.
the starter is just plain wore out. doesnt even hum or begin to start. new battery.

It's darned unusual for a starter to just "die"/do nothing.

Your starter has a failure prone/dumb design manually operated starter switch attached to it. Have you checked that out?

If OK there, the next things on the list for that starter being non-responsive would be completely worn out or stuck brushes, or the solder joint between the field coil leads and the copper stud that the starter switch contacts being broken.

Those old starters are so simple, there's no reason you can't check it out or repair it yourself, NO degree in rocket surgery needed.

If you are determined to replace it, here's some part numbers.

A local parts store should be able to cross one or more of the numbers to the brand they handle.

My money's on a bad switch and they can be cleaned and put back in service. First thing to do is take the two screws out of the switch on top and remove it. Clean the copper stud. Hook one jumper cable to the case and touch the other one to the copper stud. If it kicks in the switch is bad. Switch is about ten to twenty bucks and napa will most likely have one on the shelf.

Kit to rebuild the starter is about $20 on fleabay but that's only if your armature and fields are good.
