I rebuilt a clutch and was wondering just how much grease is needed and where would you put it? is the type of grease critical? the book calls for something special but it is an old book and grease has come a long way since then.

The pulley bearing has to be greased I always used a high heat grease and be vigilant about putting the tractor in neutral with clutch locked while idling the bearing will last a lot longer. Quite a few years ago restored a 50 that looked as if the bearing had never been greased or the tractor idled so much with clutch released it wore a deep groove into the crankshaft.

Any place where two metals rub together should have a thin film of grease on it. The toggles the sliding member the spline the yoke but not so much grease that it would throw of and get on the clutch facings.

Use high temperature grease in the bearing and in both cups of the toggles and operating sleeve. Use never-seeze on the the toggle pivot pins and on the three operating bolts.

i did all that you suggested, but i did not fill the cavity of the operating sleeve with grease, just a layer on metal to metal contacts. I wanted to minimize the mess i cleaned out of the toggle area when i started this job.
