430S Brake job

Has anyone replaced the brakes on a 430S? The original beakes from 1958 are getting a little weak.

Any tips or gotchas on this job?

IIRC,
1. When you get it apart, if you are not in a hurry, shop the auto rebuilders in your area to reface the discs.
It will be a lot cheaper than Mother Deere.

2. There is a hole (about 1/4" in diameter) at the bottom of the casting bowl to let oil back into the
differential case should any leak past the axle seal. Clean out this hole.

3. Brace the front axle to the steering pedestal so that the tractor cannot rotate (in case it falls
off your jack stands).

Be sure the balls and ramps between the disks are in good shape. Put a dab of high
temperature grease in the ball cavities. Make sure the springs haven't been overheated and
lost their temper.

I had the parts to rebuild the brakes for my 435 on the shelf for about 3 years before getting around to installing them . Tried it around the yard and marvelled at how well they worked . The eldest boy then drove the tractor to the back field and I took the truck . When I walked up to the tractor there was the stench of hot brakes and the paint was discolouring on the brake housings .
Stupid @ss brain dead kid drove the entire way with the BRAND NEW brakes locked on. Asked him if the engine was lugging and and working as he drove . He said he noticed but didn’t Think anything of it .
