Model 40 + MC

Hi there!

I am just starting down this road and will do more research but in the meantime will anyone please describe if it is possible to interchange parts one to one between the Model 40 and the prior MC (1949), apart from tracks of course :)

I need a crawler and there is one not working as is, but there is a model 40 that is in working order, so I am thinking of putting them together and have a working machine as opposed to a full (i.e. lengthy) restoration project.

Thank you!

When you say "one for one", I don't know how to take that.

Many, many parts are "the same" - but some are not. Got to get to the specifics before you start wrenching.

Well, the simplest one would be if it is possible to take the engine from 40 and just put it on MC without machining, drilling, etc.
Or, similarly, carburetor, transmission maybe... Basically, is it possible to swap larger modules, as opposed to small parts, to bring a machine to life and start using it?

I hope this even makes sense...

I've wanted one all my life - but I've never owned a crawler.

and ........ I will never buy one (above scrap price) I can't drive to be sure
the undercarriage and clutches are functional.

Hope JDEM chimes in on this.

Yes, yes, excellent point. Indeed, there are unique parts to a tracked machine...
Thank you, all!
Will be looking at the 40 next week.

The first year of the 40 has final drives like an MC. You can mix and match parts up through 430 in some cases. Some parts bolt right in and some require changing more to allow them to fit. I had a 40C with 420 undercarriage and final drives. The engines wilol direct swap between a 40 and an M. To go to a 420, you need to change the radiator and a few more parts. Steering clutches will interchange, but the later clutches have more plates that are thinner. The stack height is the same. A 2d or 3d year 40 is much better than the first year or an MC. A 2 or 3d year 420 is superior to everything behind it. That said, I have a really nice 40C 4 roller with a #61 blade that is very handy as long as you understand it is not a Cat D8! I have had one of these for 45 years.

CPeter, wish you replied earlier, the MC sold just 2 days before your reply.
But, now I know so much more! Just need to find the thing, they are so rare... I precisely want a small tractor so that it doesn't
shade my house or sink right through the orchard, ha-ha!

Thank you!

My little 40C. Testing a new photo posting site.
