4010 transmission rebuild

Reinstalling differential drive shaft. Service manual says I need a dummy shaft to install. Trying to do without and having no luck. Is it possible or do I need to find somebody with one to install.

I don't think you can do it with out the dummy shaft,, I have one and it is still ornery to do...as you go be "sure" you have every thing going the correct direction,,some of the collars receive a snap ring so if it's turned wrong it won't match up...

Thanks Tim. You are located in Ohio right? I'm around Canton.would you be interested in doing it if you are close enough.I don't mind driving.

you can do it with out a dummy shaft but thy are a challenge i use a just a smooth shaft to start then go from there if i not mistaken the original jd transmission tools had cone you could spread the snaps rings with put pice of metal in then to keep them spread was told made lot difference but it can be done with out. i getting to the point i hope i don't have to do any more one probable show up tomorrow knowing my luck.

Used a dummy shaft in college, but never after that, seemed silly to me to load on one shaft then move to another shaft, just skip the middle man. Last one was a 4010. Also if you replaced the reverse gear on the topshaft, you also have to change a gear on diff driveshaft and on the countershaft.

I did a 4430 once with just a smooth shaft, not exactly the easiest thing to do, I did make up pieces to hold the snap rings open and used a #50 taper from a horizontal mill to hold them open to insert my homemade pieces, without those I don’t think I could have done it.

Since then I’ve acquired the install shaft and holding bracket, did a 4010 a month ago and it made the job so much easier.

It can be done without the dummy shaft and guide. The most important tools to have are the clips to keep the snap rings spread and a good snap-ring plier. The snap rings are all different thicknesses so that theoretically they won't fall into the wrong groove...have to be sure you install the snap-rings in proper order...all the parts need laid out in order and you need to make sure it's all clear in your mind what goes next and which end goes towards the front...

I just start stacking pieces on the mainshaft and keep moving the shaft forward until I get the last gear on. Then you need a 'pusher' to push the pinion shaft big bearing tight in the bearing race. I use a porta-power to push it tight. Then you get your snap-rings in the grooves and put the front bearing and race/cap on temporarily. That's where your home-made big lead hammer comes into play!

I've done it both ways with the dummy shaft/guide and just stuffing the shaft in. I can probably do it quicker without the dummy shaft....

I have a 3010 with a synchro trans it seems to have 3 or 4 forward gears over on the left side where newtral should be, but when you shift it to the right and try to hit the gears where they should be it powers down the engine and wants to kill off, it also does this in the park position, so I have no park and no reverse and only 3 or 4 forward gears, is this a normal problem? I see no talk on this subject, I was under the impression these syncro trans were about bulletproof so honestly didn't look at it much when I bought it as is where is..I'll still use it, but it's gonna be tough to hook up equipment.
