John Deere H Brake Trouble

I adjusted the brakes on my JD H useing the adjustment screw and now one brake does not work at all. It pushes all the way down and nothing. Does anyone have any ideas.

If you screwed the screw in (clockwise) which is to make them tighter then maybe it went in too far past the adjusting pins ?
If you screwed the screw out (counter clockwise) then screw it back the other way.

If you can't get it back then time to pull an axle housing for a look and repair.

I have never pulled the axle housing before. Is it a big job,are there any special tools and how do i do it. Does the gear oil need to be draines.

Not a hard job. You'll have to rig a puller with allthread to get the drum off. Brakes are simple and you will see the problem right away. No oil or gasket to worry about. I have the paragraphs from the I&T manual but can't upload them just now. I'll try again later.

The other fellows have given good advice. The excerpt above is from an old 1942 Field Service Bulletin that describes braking action and the problems that will occur if brakes are tightened too much. Those brakes really need a fair amount of free play to work effectively, ESPECIALLY the "H" because those brakes are marginal at best and are really only sized for turning assistance and to stop a tractor without a significant load.

It's not that big of a job, yes you have to drain the grease probably needs changing any way.If they have never been off the seals are probably shot and need replacing. You have to remove the rear housing cover to accomplish the job.
