JD MT Starter

Can a JD MT starter be removed without taking the battery box off? There is less than an inch clearance between it and the back of the starter. If so, I would guess it would need to be pulled off on the right side because of the sediment bowl, correct?

I need to get mine fixed and wanted to know if it's a five minute job or an hour since it's so cold.

No

It's an hour job, unless the 1/4" capscrews in the torque tube break off.

Take it off through either side of the tractor.

Just back the two 1/4" screws back then pull it back to remove? Don't see how that would take an hour, unless I'm missing something? I understand it would take a while if they broke of though.

No.

You will need to remove the battery box.

Seems easier to me removing it from the right side.

Remove the battery cable and ammeter wire from the right side.

Remove the hex jam nut and special set screw from the right side.

Remove the starting motor while on the right side.

It will take longer than 5 minutes, but it will take less than an hour with practice.

Hope this helps.

Thank you James! Exactly what I needed to know.

My apologies jCarroll, when you said No, I thought you meant I did not need to remove the battery box.

I am with James. Been there, tried that, removed the battery. It is a good time to clean your battery connections, check for corrosion in the battery box or leaks, do any repairs behind the dash panel, etc.
