Model M front axle shaft?

What's required to put the AM1604T kit in the front axle of a model M? That's the kit that replaces the 13/16" pivot shaft with the stronger 1" shaft. Do the holes at the lower end of the front support have to be reamed out?

That kit didn't have a 1" shaft. It was 13/16. It included the shaft, 2 bushings, 2 thin spacers, grease zerk, pin, and a grooved lock plate. The spacer's, pin, bushing's, and grease zerk are all that's available now. You have to make the shaft and lock plate.

Yes you could put in a larger shaft by reaming out the holes but a body would have to be carefull to keep the holes lined up (remembering that any wear in the holes will be on the top side). The only way I would do that is if the holes were severly worn as the 13/16 shaft is plenty strong enough.

When I rebuilt the one we had the hole in the frame was worn egg shaped, so I made a tapered bushing so when I tightened the nut it took all the slack out and worked well. I made my own trunnion tube with brass bushings and a grease zerk in it.

Is that the pivot pin ? I just made one for mine. Found some bushing stock that fit and I think just needed to cut the length off of them. Was easy to do. A local bearing supply house also handled bushing stock.

So, how do we account for the pivot shaft discussed at http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=jd&th=602388 is 1" OD. I see the M428T pivot shaft was used up to SN48516, then shaft M1593T was used from SN 47517 and on. Further, I see that the pivot shaft and bushing change over kit (AM1604T) was uses only up to SN 48616. Were both the M428T shaft and the shaft used in the AM1694T kit 13/16" OD? Then was the M1593 shaft 1" dia?

For your convenience I'm repeating a post I just left you on the earlier discussion of this.

M-MAN, the axle pivot shaft bushings in in my axle assembly are 1" ID. How did you accommodate the 1" OD pivot shaft into the original 13/16" OD holes in the lower part of you front end support assembly?

The one I have with the late model front end was changed before I acquired it. Just walked out and looked and they did use the 1 inch shaft. There was no set screw in the rear to hold the pivot shaft like a late model support would have so they had to ream out the support holes in the orig. The back one looked terrible so I'll have to address that one day. I made a change over shaft and lock plate for my other M and ordered the bushing's, pin, and shims from Deere.

If I were you and the holes in your support are good I would use a 13/16 shaft and change the bushings to accommodate it. If your holes are wallowed out then ream them out to fit the 1 in shaft. If you go the 1 in route you'll need to drill and tap the center of the rear support hole for a set screw. I would put a dimple in the shaft where the set screw makes contact with a countersink so you won't have to tighten the set screw hard and it will still hold. Use a jam nut on that set screw. The whole point of the change over kit with the lock plate and the late model large shaft with a set screw was to keep that shaft from turning at all and wearing out the support.

If you could get your hands on a late model support that would be the simplest route but they are spensive!
