John Deere 420 3-point creeps UP

The thread about a 520 3-point creeping down reminds me to ask:

When running my 420 with the pto driven woodchipper on the 3-point, I have to tie a rope on the single Touch-O-Matic.
To keep the chipper on the ground, otherwise it wants to rise in little jerks until it is up all the way.

Any ideas what to investigate?

If the lever is moving then I think there would be a friction spot you can adjust it tighter.

You wrote " single touchomatic".....so you have only one lever for the 3 point? Didn't know the 420 came in that configuration. If you have 2 levers, I can help with your concern.

Doesn't your book show friction disks for that assembly?

I had to replace mine.

However, mine like most i have seen was a dual TOM.

Yes, only one lever for the 3 point.
Has five speed but not the optional live pto, just tranny pto.

I have not had it a year yet and just started using the chipper.

I will check out the friction disc, thanks.

P.S. can chip hard green limbs in the 5" dia. range. Gives the 420 a good workout, Sometimes you have to play with the chipper feed handle to catch it in time before it stalls out.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]Dave H[/b:654c4848f0] on the friction disks.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]TOUCH-O-MATIC QUADRANT ASSEMBLY Standard[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the friction disks (Key 21).

Hope this helps.

it is a 420S, maybe why it only has the single lever.

I have a early 420U which also has just the single touch-o-matic.
I could see the friction disc being loose causing the lever to go down, but he said the lever creeps up. That has to be more due to a improperly set feedback spring like B&D suggest. Or possibly a leak in the lift valve circuit?
