My uncle restored his 53 G two years ago and then passed away. Well I have ended up with it and it starts, runs and idles perfectly. It sounds so pure but one thing when I pull the throttle back from full to idle it backfires. Can you guys tell me what could be causing that. It has new spark plugs and wires too.
 
And if adjusting idle fuel doesn't help then throttle shaft and bushings are probably worn out causing it to suck too much air when you close throttle blade and that causes backfire. Lean mixture. Too much air or too little fuel.
 
If its running good I would just leave things alone. My dad had one an I loved pulling chopper boxes home with it an I would pull the throttle back an it would do the same its just burning the fuel that was running in the motor fast the shut off fast. I use to like doing it more when as a kid and lots of time we were working in the dark to watch the fire fly out of it as it backfires.
 

Naw..any time you are going downhill with a good load (like 2 loads of grain, behind a JD "B") they will pop and crank over and over...then the straight pipe starts to talk as it draggs down on the next hill...then repeat..!!
Hardest thing is to keep them from over-reving excessively on the down-hill...gotta start slowed down at the top of the hill...
