installed new rear axle seals & bearings . axles & bull gears in place with nuts on end of axles against bull gears, did not tighten yet. IT manual says 001-004 end play, also read somewhere on line to tighten nuts with a 20" wrench.

QUESTIONS- 1- how do you check end play?

2- or just crank em down tight with a 20" wrench

I set them before I install the outer felts. These will make a lot of drag. I run the nuts down until I cannot get any end play but they still turn freely. So basically no end play and no preload.

thanks mike, that sounds good. should get the rest of it back together over the weekend.

what type and weight oil would you recommend I put back in the rear end/ trans.

I have several with 85-140 in them ? Mainly because I could find it easy. If GL5 try and find out if yellow metal friendly. That A has bronze bushings on the pto .

have it all back together - axles feel good. just have to put hubs and wheels back on . go to tractor supply tomorrow morning and see what kind of oil they have for it. I am aware of the bronze pto bushings . I discovered they are shot while I had it apart for this, project for another time. thinking I will take axle housing off as a whole when I replace the pto bushings. have you ever used the 90w tractor supply has that is gl-i straight mineral oil used in ford tractors in a john deere ? I know there are no additives in that.
