John Deere D Oil Pressure

Good Afternoon Guys,

I recently purchased a 1949 John Deere D that is in really good condition. After getting it home and cleaning the fuel tank, changing all fluids, and rebuilding the carb I got it running. I immediately noticed that the oil pressure was a bit low. I installed a numeric pressure gauge, drained the oil, and cleaned the oil pump pick up. Then filled the crankcase with SAE 30 oil and new filter. Upon start up the pressure came up to just 9 psi. The RPM was at 650 and upon increasing to 830 there was no change in pressure. I've since inspected the oil bypass ball, spring, and cap. All are in good condition.

I'd like your feedback on am I looking at excessive oil pump gear wear or something else.

Thank Much!

I think on most 2 cylinders, oil pressure was 10-15 psi. You do sound a little low... I think I'd verify with another gauge before going too far, though.

It could be the oil pump is worn some. Or it could be something else. I'd take the top cover off and have a look around. Might be as simple as removing a shim from each connecting rod...

Is there a way to turn a D pressure up ? All other models there is. I never worked on one of those.

The oil pressure adjustment is very similar to the other models, the main difference is that it's inside the crankcase and not easy to get to

Good day. I have never checked the OIL PSI with a numerical gauge on any of my Three Styled JD D's or the two I assisted my neighbour in restoring.

I have ALWAYS checked the CONNECTING RODs bearing clearance with plastiqaue and removed SHIMS to decrease the running bearing clearance to the minimum on the connecting rods.

I have always ran the nut down (increased )two turns on the pressure control valve on the oil pump regardless of running history just as a matter of principal.

I have always removed the engine OIL pump inlet screen from below the FLY WHEEL and cleaned.

Installed a new JD oil gauge that reads L M H. With 40 weight oil and the coolant temperature gauge at 205 deg F the engine oil pressure gauge reads between the M & H at any Engine RPM.

I'm presently away for the winter and do not have any pictures nor operator manual or service manual:

I have a 49 d and its had 9to 10 lbs oil pressure for all the years I've had it . I even work it every year on the farm and never had a problem. Bob
