John Deere Styled B serial tag

I picked up a John Deere B last week with serial number 63151. The question I have comes in to the serial tag placement. It is located behind the flywheel like the unstyled tractors. Has anyone heard of this or have an explanation as to why this could be? I have read that everything after 60,000 was on the clutch side of the tractor. The tractor looks all original and there are no marks on the clutch side where the serial number could have been moved.

Your B is a 1939 model. They were basically an unstyled tractor with early-styled sheet metal. Parts
wise they are in many cases different from all other B models.

Yes you have a 1939 and that is where the sn is located. That series of B was only made 1939 and 1940 and can be challenging to find parts for as some are unique to that series. I have one also and have been working on it for about 3 years (finally ready for paint I think). Good luck and remember... it's supposed to be fun!

Don't know if this is still active post. I checked a 39 B, sn60386, I have and the tag is behind the flywheel. Tags may have been moved in anticipation of electric start. Another 39,sn77161 has the tag under the mag.

hanks! I do enjoy my tractors most of the time! Except when they do not work properly! But that is to be expected with tractors this old! I have heard from a few people that the early styled B had the serial number there and was changed shortly thereafter!
