Factory origianl on an M?

I don't see a center section like this in the parts diagrams for a M nor MT. The bracing (gussets) are different. Ever see one like it? Is it factory original?

Yes.

Yes.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]ADJUSTABLE FRONT AXLE[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the left and right adjustable pipes (Key 5) and adjustable axle (Key 9).

The adjustable front axle was available on Model M tractors serial number 10001 in 1947 through 43250 in late 1951.

Take a look at the photos below of "Conroy" our 48M.

Obviously the adjustable pipe in the above photo is no longer adjustable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, BUT, look closer at the steering stops, the clamps, but most of all the bracing gussets between the center oscillation tube and the axle center telescoping adjusting tube. It's that kind of bracing that looks unusual.

Shop-made replacement for the OE center tube?

Thanks. Now how about a shot up under the front of the tractor, by the bolster, showing the bracing in that center tube?

Thanks James for taking those photos and sending them. Sure hope it's warmer in your shed today than in mine. Your "Sparky's"('51 M) front axle center section looks just line mine. That for me indicates it is factory and not home made, even though the parts book pages on pdf do not show that exact configuration. I suppose it's that old thing of one design having been used in production, then replaced later on by another design for the parts end of the business.

"Sparky" is currently parked in my shop getting "fitted" with a refurbished M12A cultivator.

Temperature is not too bad, but did have to dodge a lot of raindrops.

After looking at the photos, it certainly looks like the welding on the front axle could have easily have been "home made".

Reminded myself that welded parts of these old tractors were welded by men and not robots.

Agree with your statement of "[i:654c4848f0]one design having been used in production, then replaced later on by another design[/i:654c4848f0]".

Pure speculation on my part, but figured the new design was not important enough to be added to the parts catalog.

Always glad to help when I can.

what you got is a later john deere axle used on the latest of the john deere M tractors.
it was continued onto the model 40 production.
a much stronger braced, better steering arm and stop.
u are lucky to have gotten them apart.
most now adays are rusted or even welded together because of coming loose.

It is a late model factory origonal. I have one just like it under one of my 49's even though it didn't leave the factory with it. I also have another complete spare. The latest parts book doesn't show it but there were actually three different version's. 47/48, 49/50, 51/52.

That looks like the one we had after I rebuilt it, that was a weak point on the early M's. I knew about it when we bought it, when I drove it on the trailer when the rt. tire touched the front the left was still back 4 inches. I welded in a heavy tube with brass bushings in it and a grease zerk, and braced it like the one you have, it worked well.

M-MAN, the axle pivot shaft bushings in in my axle assembly are 1" ID. How did you accommodate the 1" OD pivot shaft into the original 13/16" OD holes in the lower part of you front end support assembly?
