Styled D Hydraulic pump

A friend has a 1947 styled D with a hydraulic pump on the mag. It will not pump and he thinks that someone tryed to put it in gear will running. He is afraid to take it apart. Would the pump have the same drive as the mag and if it would be broken, wouldn't the mag not turn also? The tractor runs. We can't find any good pictures or scematics of the pump. Nothing in the deere part book, so who made these?

Any help will be appreciated. Frank

They were made by Deere, look in a parts catalog for an A, to start with. That pump fit a number of tractors, A,b, g, and D.

It is pretty simple, I suggest you take it apart.... just two gears inside. Perhaps there is a key on the drive gear that is missing? If the shaft were broken, the mag would not function either.

Good luck. Let us know what you find.

Frank,

The pump shaft is driven by the governor and in turn drives the mag. So since the tractor runs the pump shaft is turning. The biggest reason for the pump not pumping is the pump being repeatedly turned on when the engine is running. Over time the notches in the pump clutch collar and the lugs on the pump shaft get worn to the point where the pump won't stay in engaged.

An exploded view of the pump is in the A, B, G, and probably D parts catalogs. You can view the catalogs for free at www.jdparts.com. If you want I can mail you some pages from the 2-cyl hydraulics manual which covers disassembly, inspection and repair, and reassembly of the pump. Working on the pump is not complicated or difficult. The pumps were sold by Deere as an after-market upgrade kit.

If you want the hydraulics manual pages send me an email. My email is open in Classic view.

In the back of the D book, it mentioned going to the A, AR, and AO PC 406 which I do not have access to. I went to PC 675 and found that the A4142R Powr-Trol reservoir was the same as the D and the AA4475R pump went with that. Could this be the one on the D? The drive shaft shows a woodruff key which could very well be what you said could be the problem.

When it warms up some I will help him work on it. Thanks much. Frank

Frank,

A, B, and G tractors all used the same pump. This pump could also be used on a D with the addition of a separate oil reservoir. It is the one shown on page 129 of PC-675. Take a look at the pump on your friend's D and you'll see it's the same one.

The pump on page 130 of PC-675 is used on AO, AR, 50 and 60 tractors.

Send me another email with your U.S. mail address so I can mail the hyd. manual pages to you.
