JD M Pos or Neg Ground

Think I've purchased a 1950 JD M. Got to by a battery for it is it a pos ground like many other older 6 volt systems.

If your Model M still has a generator, then yes it will be a 6 volt positive ground system.

It, like other two cylinder 6 or 12 volt Deeres, came from the factory POSITIVE GROUNDED but as a past used tractor dealer and one who farmed with two cylinder Deeres I saw many that got changed over. Most often if they got changed to alternators instead of generators then they went to Negative ground...If they got converted to Negative ground typically they had the ammeter leads and the ignition coil (battery powered ignitions) leads reversed.

To be safe I would polarize the generator before starting once you install the new battery. If all is correct if you turn on lights and/or ignition not running before start up the ammeter should swing over to - discharge. If at the original positive ground on battery powered coil ignitions the - receives ignition switched voltage while the + wires to the distributor.
