4020 power shift

Looking at 4020 power shift when I drove it was rock solid in all gears except 8th. It was a couple seconds in no mans land before it finally dropped in hard. Looks like 8000 hrs on turbo tractor. Is that a big deal? Thanks for any advise.

My hesitates a little before shifting into 8th too. If memory serves, all the plates have to readjust for that shift. So a little delay is likely normal. It should engage fairly sharply when it does engage, though. If it is mushy, it could be the engine disconnect clutch slipping.

Check the PTO, too. Make sure it stops when disengaged. That is a common problem on PS 4020s, and a fairly involved fix.

I will also add the temperature has a lot to do with how they shift too. IF it is real cold mine will hardly shift into 8th before it has been running for a while.

Make sure that the oil warm.

8th gear is the hardest to powershift into. I have used the clutch (inching peddle) when shifting into 8th gear since I got my 4020 in 1970.

Down shifting (powershift) from 8th to 7th has never been an issue
