john deere question

The first reduction gear cover is the only access point for letter series tractors. Engine oil from belt pulley to input shaft for transmission.

Yes it can happen fast.

My 630 went from not using any oil, to using a quart an hour in one day. I was lucky to catch it. Of course it wasn't burning it - it was running out the rear axle seals. I checked the rod and main bearings and changed the crankshaft seals, and it went back to rarely ever needing any oil added.

Have your friend check for Bearing Clearance of the Rt Main bearing..

Just use a Dial Indicator and lightly raise the Crank with the dial indicator in place..should be approx .005 to .006" Mine was .074"..

Engine oil pouring into the trans.. turned out to be the Rt Main AND rt Rod bearing were shot, due to a blockage in the rt Bearing Quill.

An "O-Ring" JD called a "Gasket" had deteriorated and Plugged the passage..

Engine never made any noise..but would have soon..!

on my 730 that has a lot of blow buy needs rings, I'm going to replace rings, should I see if this stops it or just go ahead and replace and ck left and right seals and ck crank bearings.

I'm not a mechanic - there are many others on this forum who can give you knowledgeable advice. After disclosing that - if I was gonna open it up, I'd certainly check the seals and bearings. The little O-ring that Bushhog Papa mentions will sometimes swell on the 630. It restricts the oil supply to the right main and right connecting rod. I don't know if the 730 has the same design as the 630.

Bushhog Papa has a neat trick with lamp tubing to keep the o-ring from swelling. Here's his idea:
