Question about aftermarket syncro hub?

The old hub that has the springs and detent balls in it is smooth on the outside. JD drilled blind holes from the inside for the springs to fit in. The new aftermarket hub was drilled from the outside. Then they put plugs in the holes. The end of these plugs stich out and just barely hit the edge of the syncro drums. Should I just file them so that they clear or drive them in some more?

Depends upon the clearance. If you drive them in it might
collapse the springs so the balls won't travel in far enough.
You might measure the depth of the holes before deciding.

I'm with D-,,but I have never seen one like this before,,it should work okay,,where did you get it ??

Yes I agree with D- as well. Guess I should have measured before I put it together. At first I thought that it was made that way to make it easier to put the balls in place then just drive in flush. But with new springs and a new drive collar it seems to detent just fine. I think I will just take a little off of each side of the plugs so the drums can't rub. Came from reliable aftermarket parts. Detent balls were easy to install by just making a grove ramp for them in the old drive collar with a 4.5 inch grinder. Old hub will fit tight against new hub before you put snap ring on. As I did not have the JD tool.

I just replaced the hi-lo syncro hub on a 4020 a month or so ago...that new part was different too...had like roll-pins driven in to keep the detent springs in instead of blind holes like the worn-out one...

Deere has likely sourced these from a different supplier than they used to

well dam that going to take all the fun out chasing little steel ball around when thy pop out womder who though up that idea
