REMOVED REAR COVER AND AXLES TODAY TO REPLACE INNER AXLE SEALS AND INSPECT BEARINGS. POKED AROUND INSIDE WITH A SMALL BAR TO SEE IF ANYTHING MOVED. NO PLAY IN ANYTHING UNTILL I GOT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM/FRONT OF THE CASE. THE SHORT SHAFT OF THE BEVELED GEAR(# A4005R) AT THE VERY END OF THE POWER SHAFT IS LOOSE IN THAT SMALL HOUSING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CASE. PARTS BOOK SHOWS A BUSHING(#AA5663R AND AA5664R-.005 OVER). QUITE SURE BUSHING IS SHOT. ALSO BOTH BEVELED GEARS SHOW WEAR ON EDGE OF BOTH GEARS FROM MESHING AT AN ANGLE ARE THEY AVALIBLE? HOW DO YOU GET IN THERE ? HAVE OPERATORS AND PARTS MANUAL BUT DO NOT HAVE A SERVCE MANUAL NOR CAN I SEEM TO LOCATE ONE? ARE THOSE BUSHINGS STILL AVAILABLE?

There is a thrust washer that goes behind the bevel gear also. I changed the whole transmission housing on my A because that thrust washer was missing and the gear had worn right into the casting that supports it. The bushings are not hard to drive out and I used a piece of 3/4" threaded rod to pull the new bushings into place. It is easiest to change the bushings with the transmission shafts removed.

Be sure to get an I & T book on a model 60 tractor as it shows the installation of the updated style of bushings and where to drill the new hole for better oiling. I don't think it is showed in the A manuals.
Everything else has to come out to get down to those gears.

thanks for the info guys going to the shop now. I don't remember seeing the thrust washer last nite , gonna look it over. when you did replace it did you do it from the rear or side or both ??

The rear and the top. A lot easier to get at with the rear axle housing removed from the main case and the diff. removed too.

The original bushing was one single bushing. The replacement is two bushings. The front bushing should protrude about the thickness of the thrust washer to hold it centered. If I remember right the bushings are the same part as the spindle bushings in the wide front end.

thanks again guys. kent let me know what you have, will be awhile before I know what I need/get it apart. will be first time in this type trans. sure could use a service/repair manual for this, where can I get one????

also, have axles and related parts out except the two bearing race's/cone's inside the case. how are these removed???? I see the two slots behind the race. race's are pitted-rollers are very loose-seals are shot

A puller made to do races will latch into those notches. Some rental places may rent them ? Or since they are junk anyhow you can run a bead of weld on the face of them and when cool they will fall out. I'd make sure you have NEW ones before ruining the old ones however.

The JD service manual for a 60 will help you a lot. The section on transmission driven pto is pretty much the A transmission. The combination of this and the IT manual is about the best you can do.

decided not to make this repair at this time, will be going back to work soon. maybe next winter. thanks for the info.
