will a JD M pull a 2 furrow plough?

They handle a single bottom mounted plow best, in my soil types it would really struggle with a two bottom mounted plow. I don?t think an M would at all pull a two bottom trailer type plow in my clay soil.

The M was rated by Deere for a 2-12" or 1-16" plow. But, a lot of it depends on your soil conditions. I have a Deere #44 2-14" plow that once just for the fun of it I hooked onto my M to see what would happen. In our tight gumbo ground I had the plow set as shallow as it would go, maybe 4", and it was still all the tractor could do to pull it in low gear. (In our conditions this plow running 6 to 7" deep is a good load for my 40-hp Farmall 350 in second gear.) I had to position the drawbar height at just the right point to create a balance between getting enough traction and having the front end come up. In the ground we have I would say a single 14" bottom would be plenty. However, if you have mellow ground a 2-12" pull-type would probably work, especially if you have good tires and wheel weights.

With added weight front and rear it will handle the M2 two bottom plow just fine. Red clay here. At another farm I used to work I had an old Oliver two bottom trailing plow. For some reason it was harder to pull than the M2 Deere plow.

As a kid I did a lot of plowing with an MT, 2-bottom, 14" Deere mounted plow. Sort of a medium soil. Dad wanted it plowed deep. I run 1st gear and refilled with water several times a day. Though slow, it got the job done.

Here is my experience with an M and a mounted 2 bottom plow. When I first got my tractor it had fluid in the rear tires. It pulled the plow very good in good plowing ground like corn field after harvest. In order to keep it from plugging up with corn stalks keeping the ground speed up really helped. I could run best in 3 rd gear ! I had to keep stopping at the plow days to avoid driving up and over larger tractors going too slow ! It really impressed me. Then after removing the fluid repainting the rims I added 1 wheel weight per side on rear. Tried to plow the garden and it did not want to pull it good at all. So it defiantly needed the weight of the fluid. I sold the plow as I really didn't have a use for it.

I experienced the same thing at our plow days. It got so bad all us John Deere guys left and started out own plow day. No other colors allowed.
